This project contains three tasks to learn about Roy Lichtenstein, to create a still life drawing and then to develop that drawing into a piece that has aspects of Lichtenstein’s style. Lichtenstein had already been making still lifes for quite some time at this point in his career, dating back to his popular Pop image Sandwich and Soda from 1964. But while Lichtenstein’s works might contain elements of art history, the Pop artist always asserted that his renditions were distinctly modern. It is tried and tested as a way to develop a student’s coursework with some experimentation of technique and could easily form the inspiration for a larger project. The present lot, Still Life, 1971, is among his very first works in the series–it is Lichtenstein’s tribute to an eternal trope in art history. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. As a young boy, he developed an interest in two things - comic books and science.
